Area of special concern of the Laboratory members is and will be general basic research with emphasis on the study of biologically active molecules, design, synthesis and properties of organometallic complexes of biological and pharmacological significance and those that can be applied in organic synthesis, catalysis or as chromogenic and fluorescent chemosensors.
We plan to measure and monitor those relevant components of the atmosphere (reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species) that will allow us to study the oxidation effects of the atmosphere on the living organisms and materials.
Special attention will be oriented to macromolecules – to structural analysis of peptides and proteins in complex biological mixtures. Experiments with state-of-art mass spectrometry techniques is unavoidable in achieving this goal. Thus the new sophisticated mass spectrometers which have been installed in our Laboratory this year will be used: Amazon ETD, Bruker Daltonik (LC-MS) and MALDI TOF Biotyper, Bruker Daltonik. To improve the fundamental understanding of reactivity, (biological) activity and mechanism of other classes of molecules UV photoelectron spectroscopy (PES), electronic (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry together with resident techniques including IR, NMR, EPR and X-Ray diffraction will be used. Experimental studies, combined with computational investigations provide a conceptual framework and an efficient means to obtain direct insight into reactivity patterns, the importance of electronic structure and the nature of intermediates.
One category of mass spectrometry activities will be focused towards a fee-based routine service program for external users including qualitative protein identification and the identification and characterization of microorganisms
Laboratory instrumentation
Instruments available for the work on our research projects:
- MALDI TOF mass spectrometer system for whole cell mass spectrometry
- nano-LC-MS/MS system for protein primary structure research, PTM discovery and proteomics
- Photoelectron Spectrometer UVG 3
- uv-vis spectrophotometer
- different kind of monitors for air pollution measurements
Some of the existing equipment is obviously old (e.g. photoelectron spectrometer) but is still performing satisfactorily and is being used to produce high quality research work as evidenced by the publications.
