Raman Renishaw specrometer INVIA was purchased specifically having in mind detection of microplastic particles (1 micron to 5 mm in size) using special Particle Analyzer software installed on it. However, this does not limit its application in materials science, chemistry and biology as well. Vibrational spectra can be obtained in the 100-3500 cm-1 (for 785 nm laser) and 100 – 5000 cm-1 (457, 532 nm lasers).

Detailed technical characteristics

It has Renishaw CCD Centrus detector and Andor EMCCD camera with 1600x200 pixels and three laser excitation wavelengths (457, 532 and 785 nm). Accompanying Leica DM2700 microscope facilitates obtaining images in bright field or dark field environment. In addition there is a fluorescence kit for obtaining images in following spectral intervals: blue (450 – 480 nm), green (510 - 550 nm), blue-violet (400 - 440 nm) and UV (330-390 nm). The grating with 2400 grooves per mm facilitates spectral resolution better than 0.5 cm-1 and is used with 532 and 457 nm lasers, while the grating with 1200 grooves/mm is suitable for 785 nm excitation. By recording spectra at particle positions only, Particle Analyzer software enables user to perform swift spectral database search and determination of the particles' chemical composition. Microscope spatial resolution is better than 0.3 microns in the x-y plane and 2 microns in the z direction.
