O istraživanju:
Kako se životinjske skupine nose s povećanim rizikom od zaraznih bolesti?
Život u skupinama donosi brojne prednosti, no istovremeno povećava rizik od širenja bolesti među članovima zbog učestalih kontakata. Društveni kukci poput mrava, pčela i termita razvili su sofisticirane strategije obrane od bolesti na razini cijele zajednice, što nazivamo društvenim imunitetom. Međutim, dosadašnja istraživanja takvih obrambenih mehanizama većinom su usmjerena upravo na ove zadružne (eusocijalne) vrste, dok o obrani od bolesti kod drugih životinja koje također žive u grupama znamo vrlo malo, iako one predstavljaju većinu životinjskih skupina.
U svom istraživanju koristim brašnare (rod Tribolium) kao inovativan eksperimentalni model. Moj je cilj otkriti na koje načine ove ne-eusocijalne životinjske skupine, koje zapravo čine većinu grupno-živućih organizama, prepoznaju i sprječavaju epidemije unutar svojih zajednica.
