The hypotheses:
- organic matter, especially lipids, synthesized under oligotrophy, warming, and the combination of both stressors are less susceptible to abiotic (photooxidation) and biotic (bacterial) degradation
- organic matter, especially lipids, from coccolithophores growing under oligotrophy, warming, and the combination of both stressors are less susceptible to abiotic (photooxidation) and biotic (bacterial) degradation than OM from diatoms
- the altered lipid composition of phytoplankton in the future ocean will contribute positively to the Biological Carbon Pump
