RBI Leads in Horizon 2020 Programme Achievements
The Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) has distinguished itself by achieving success in the highly competitive Horizon 2020 programme, the European Union's framework programme for research and innovation. This recognition comes as a result of the institute’s substantial contribution and outstanding performance in terms of both the number of projects applied for and successfully contracted.
According to a study titled "Participation of the Republic of Croatia in the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation," which covers the period from 2014 to the end of 2021, the RBI has proven to be a leader among Croatian applicants particulary within the 'Excellent Science' thematic priority. The study, published by the Ministry of Science and Education (MZO) on its website, highlights the RBI’s significant achievements.
With a total of 38 projects contracted, valued at 16.2 million euros, the RBI’s success spans various segments of the Horizon 2020 programme. This includes prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grants for two projects, 10 Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions, and 21 projects under the competitive Research and Innovation Actions (RIA activities), underscoring the institute’s dedication to advancing scientific excellence and innovation.
Dr. David M. Smith, the Director General of the RBI, expressed pride in these accomplishments, attributing them to the hard work and dedication of the institute’s scientists, administrative staff, and technical services. He emphasised the importance of investing in research and boosting administrative support through building human capacities. The RBI’s achievements not only reflect the excellence of its researchers and innovative projects but also the supportive working conditions, including sophisticated instruments, modern infrastructure, and administrative and technical staff support.
Furthermore, Dr. Smith highlighted an ongoing major capital infrastructural project funded by European structural funds, marking the first such investment in the institute’s infrastructure since its establishment in 1950. This project promises even greater achievements in the future, providing RBI scientists with state-of-the-art working conditions.
The study extracts reveal the RBI’s prominence in the 'Excellent Science' thematic priority, securing over 10 million euros across 27 projects, including two ERC projects. It also underscores the RBI’s leadership in Marie Sklodowska-Curie actions and its significant role in competitive research and innovation activities (RIA activities) alongside other prominent Croatian academic institutions.
This success illustrates the RBI’s pivotal role in scientific research and innovation within Croatia, showcasing its valuable contributions to the Horizon 2020 programme. As the institute continues its commitment to scientific excellence, it remains a key player in advancing the scope of science and innovation both nationally and across Europe.
