Strong presence of RBI scientists at WATOC 2011
The Ninth Triennial Congress of the World Association of Theoretical and Computational Chemists (WATOC 2011) was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, from July 17-22, 2011. To go with a total record attendance in excess of 1300 participants, the size and success of the RBI delegation also reached new heights.
Notably, Miss Karmen Čondić-Jurkić, from the Group for Quantum Organic Chemistry (GQOC), was awarded the WATOC Poster Prize for her contribution entitled Possible Protonation States of Histidines in the Active Site of (6-4) Photolyase (see photo). Invited lectures were given by Dr. Mirjana Maksić, from the Laboratory for Physical-Organic Chemistry (LPOC), and Dr. David Smith (GQOC), who also chaired a session dedicated to the memory of Prof. Zvonimir Maksić (GQOC). Dr. Sanja Tomić, from the Laboratory of Chemical and Biological Crystallography (LCBC), and Dr. Robert Vianello (GQOC) delivered contributed lectures, while posters were presented by Dr. Danijela Barić, Dr. Ines Despotivić and Dr. Nena Peran, from GQOC, Dr. Ivana Antol and Mr. Fabijan Pavošević, from LPOC, and Dr. Branimir Bertoša and Miss Marina Grabar from LCBC.
A bid from RBI scientists to host WATOC 2017 in Croatia was well received by the WATOC Board and was included on the resulting shortlist of contenders. A final decision will be made in 2013 and announced at WATOC 2014, which will be held in Santiago, Chile.
