SEMINAR: Downloading and making sense of the Sky: Large Sky Surveys and AI

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is a new NSF/DOE-funded facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile. It houses the 8.4m Simonyi Survey Telescope and the 3.2 Gigapixel LSSTCam camera. The Observatory is in the final stages of construction, and has just finished
its first phase of commissioning. Over a ten-year period (projected to start in late 2025) Rubin will execute the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). Enabled by its 9.6 square degree field of view and a cadence covering the sky every 3-4 days
to ~24.5 mag, this dataset can dramatically advance numerous area of astronomy.
Speaker will describe the Rubin system, provide an update on its construction and commissioning efforts, and discuss the areas where we will use HPC and AI. The applications in Rubin range from basic signal processing, to high-dimensional data mining,
to acceleration of coding. With the addition of HPC and AI techniques, we hope to fully take advantage of Rubin's uniquely rich and powerful dataset.
