RBI Signs Contract for the implementation of construction works within O-ZIP project

Feb 21st 2023

The Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) signed a contract with Lavčević d.d. and Lavčević inženjering d.o.o. for the implementation of construction works within the framework of the structural project Open Scientific Infrastructure Platform for Innovative Applications in Economy and Society (O-ZIP).

Living in a Nanomaterial World: Nanoislands for Next-generation Sensors

Feb 17th 2023

Scientists from the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI), in collaboration with colleagues from the Faculty of Science at the University of Zagreb (PMF) and the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from Barcelona, have developed nanostructures that could be used in next-generation diagnostic devices. The resulting nanostructures combine exceptional stability with the ability to detect molecules at very low concentrations.

Molecular-level evidence of early lipid transformations in the oceans

Feb 14th 2023

In the new study published in the journal Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, an international research team led by Dr. Blaženka Gašparović of the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) and Prof. Tanner Schaub of the New Mexico State University, provides a more comprehensive understanding of lipid dynamics in the marine environment and advances our knowledge of how they contribute to global climate change.

Reducing their natural signals: How sneaky germs hide from ants

Feb 14th 2023

Not only humans are social, ants are too. Group members are taking care of sick ones by providing collective hygiene measures. This presents germs with a task. They must circumvent the immunity of an individual ant and avoid the group’s healthcare. A new study now published in Nature Ecology & Evolution reveals that germs develop a sneaky way to escape the ant colony’s defense systems by reducing their detection cues.

Successful aclimation of marine diatoms to climate change

Feb 6th 2023

Studying the adaptation of marine diatoms Chaetoceros curvisetus and Chaetoceros pseudocurvisetus, scientists from the Division for Marine and Environmental Research of teh Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI), in collaboration with scientists from the RBI Centre for Marine Research in Rovinj, came to new conclusions that are important for understanding the mechanisms of their adaptation and survival under growth conditions at higher temperatures. The results are published open access in the prestigious journal Limnology and Oceanography.

Deploying the first inter-European quantum network

Dec 14th 2022

Advanced Quantum Technologies has just published the results of the first public demonstration of an inter-European quantum communication network established, during the G20 meeting in Trieste, by a group of scientists that realized an encrypted communication between Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia.

Can supervolcano explosions create meteotsunami waves?

Nov 30th 2022

Meteotsunami waves that can occur as a result of a supervolcano eruption or a large asteroid impacts are extremely rare, but in specific conditions they can create ernomous waves that can threaten coastal areas and the safety of navigation. These atmospheric acoustic-gravity waves including the Lamb waves can circle the globe multiple times.

Medical Research Agency and RBI strengthen collaboration on health innovation network

Nov 11th 2022

On Wednesday, the Ruđer Bošković Institute (RBI) welcomed a delegation from the Medical Research Agency national agency of Poland, based in Warsaw, on the occasion of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two organisations.

Should we trust everything we read about spiders?

Oct 24th 2022

It is no secret that the Internet and social media encourage the rampant dissemination of both vast amounts of useful information and misinformation from all spheres of life.
