Croatia's president Dr. Ivo Josipović hosted a delegation of representatives involved in the project "Civitas, scientists and media against violence" and expressed his support for their activities. Scientists Dr. Mariastefania Antica, Dr. Hrvoje Fulgosi and Dr. Đurđica Ugarković lead the RBI initiative in this project.

A review article highlighting the most important achievements in chemometrics for the years 2008 and 2009 has been published in the journal Analytical Chemistry (Anal.Chem. 2010, 82, 4699-4711). The work of Dr. Ivica Kopriva (LAIR) and Dr. Ivanka Jerić (ZOKB) on the isolation of pure components from a small number of mixtures (Journal of Mass Spectrometry, 2009, 44(9) 1378-1388) was selected as one of the important achievements in 2009.

RBI scientists Fran Supek, Nives Skunca, Jelena Repar and Dr. Tomislav Šmuc have published an extensive computational study entitled "Translational selection is ubiquitous in prokaryotes" in the prestigious journal PLoS Genetics (IF=9.5). The study describes how natural selection acts to improve speed and accuracy of protein translation, as evidenced in biased codon usage in prokaryotic genomes.

Dr. Boro Dropulić will hold a lecture entitled The Translation of Scientific Ideas into Business Opportunities at RBI on 2.7.2010 at 14:00 in the lecture hall in Wing III. This lecture is sponsored by the American Embassy in Zagreb in collaboration with RBI.

In the latest issue of BMC Biology Dr. Francesa Cicarelli has written a commentary on study done by Dr. Tomislav Domazet-Lošo of the RBI and Dr. Diethard Tautz of the Max-Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology. The commentary is entitled (R)evolution in the genetics of tumor diseases. Dr. Cicarelli of the European Institute for Oncology comments on the study of the Croatian-German team and points to the importance and far-reaching implications of their scientific results. She further expresses the opinion that a systems level approache used by Dr. Domazet-Lošo and Dr. Tautz using their genomic phylostratigraphy method gives rise to new hope in understanding the genetics of cancer.

Leaders of the Finnish Central Chamber of Commerce and the World Trade Organization Helsinki, together with a group of seven directors from Finnish companies, visited the Ruđer Bošković Institut today. They met with Dr. Marin Roje, Assistant Director for Finance and Economy, Dr. Hrvoje Zorc, Advisor for Innovation and Technology, Dr. Tome Antičić, Advisor for Cooperation with Universities in Croatia, and Domagoj Oreb and Davor Aničić from Ruđer Innovations Ltd. The visit was organized by the Croatian Embassy in Helsinki and the World Trade Organization with the aim of considering the future cooperation and investments.

General Director of the Ruđer Bošković Institute Dr. Danica Ramljak accompanied by the Advisor for the International Cooperation, Dr. Marija-Mary Sopta, left for a working visit to Canada today. The purpose of this working visit is to establish contacts with top scientific institutions in Canada which are of the strategic interest for the RBI in developing a mutual cooperation.

At a gala event held in the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall the 60th anniversary of RBI was celebrated today.

A gala event marking the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Ruder Bošković Institute, Croatia's largest natural science research institute and one of the leading multidisciplinary research institutes in Southeast Europe, will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 in the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall under the patronage of the President of the Republic of Croatia Dr. Ivo Josipovic and Mrs Jadranka Kosor, Premier of the government of the Republic of Croatia.

RBI Research associate Dr. Aleksandar Višnjevac has published an article entitled First Zn(II) bowl-complexes modeling the active site of mono-nuclear metallo-enzymes in the prestigious journal Organic Letters. This work details the development of a novel generation of biomimetic models of mono-nuclear metallo-enzyme active sites based on specially designed Resorcinarene-based ligands.
